Glasgow is Scotland's largest populated city and lies south of the centre of Scotland. Its actual population is 557,869 (as of 2001). Its population density is a massive 3,188 per km2. The city's name originates from Brythonic glas cu (the city's name in modern Gaelic is similar: Glaschu), which means green hollow, and is also translated romantically as "the dear green place". It has a popular pseudonym "Glesga" by which the Glaswegians refer to it themselves. The rich history includes the Roman times, when a wall was built to separate the Roman britannia from the Celts and the Picts in Caledonia. The wall stil exists in Glasgow today. Glasgow was granted city status in the 12th century and this was when the cathedral was built.
